Art department professor Mendoza takes home prize for movie poster design

Nick Mendoza of the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History at Oklahoma State University recently received a silver award from the United States International Poster Biennial. Professor Mendoza’s poster, which he designed for the 2022 film “The Integrity of Joseph Chambers,” was one of 285 pieces chosen for the biennial show from among 7,380 entries.

Physics Ph.D. student named Honorary Commencement Marshal

Jared Austin-Harris, an Oklahoma State University Department of Physics Ph.D. candidate, has been named an Honorary Commencement Marshal for OSU’s fall 2023 graduate commencement ceremony. Austin-Harris is one of four graduate students selected for the role.

On Nov. 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to dedicate a cemetery at the site of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Four months before, about 50,000 soldiers had been killed, wounded or captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, later seen as a turning point in the war.

Department of Languages and Literatures mourns passing of former head Dr. Perry Gethner

Oklahoma State University’s Department of Language and Literatures lost a beloved member of its faculty this week with the passing of recently retired French professor and former department head Dr. Perry Gethner on Tuesday, Nov. 14. A graduate of Carlton College and Yale University, Gethner came to OSU as an assistant professor in 1984. He rose through the ranks, serving as the department of head of Languages and Literatures from 1999 to 2015 and retiring this year as Regents Professor of Foreign Language after 39 years at OSU.

Geology's Jim Puckette receives two awards from American Association of Petroleum Geologists

Dr. Jim Puckette of the Boone Pickens School of Geology at Oklahoma State University received two awards from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Midcontinent Sectional Conference. Puckette was given the Robey H. Clark Memorial in recognition of his years of service and numerous contributions to the science of geology, as well as the Roger L. Planalp award for best poster.

Dr. Rosemary Avance, an assistant professor in the School of Media and Strategic Communications at Oklahoma State University, recently performed a groundbreaking study for the Oklahoma Media Center alongside University of Oklahoma professor Dr. Allyson Shortle. Avance and Shortle designed, implemented and executed a qualitative observational study on Oklahoma news deserts, or areas where residents have limited to no access to reliable local journalism. Their extensive research explored whether Oklahomans are receiving local news, which provides information necessary for residents to engage with and make informed decisions about their communities.

On Oct. 28, Oklahoma State University College of Arts and Sciences alumnus Dr. Edwin Chappabitty Jr. (1941-2021) was posthumously inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame. Chappabitty was born in Lawton, Oklahoma, and graduated from OSU in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in zoology.

On Oct. 19, the American Physical Society announced its newest cohort of fellowship recipients. Among them was Oklahoma State University physics associate professor Dr. Mario Borunda. Borunda, who serves as an associate dean and senior inclusion officer for the College of Arts and Sciences, is one of just 10 APS fellows ever selected from OSU.
