Benbrook honored as Outstanding Young Alumni for national journalism career

Julia Benbrook, a 2017 Oklahoma State University graduate and former Miss OSU, has built a career in national journalism that recently earned her recognition as an Outstanding Young Alumni honoree. Now a White House correspondent for CNN, Benbrook credits her OSU upbringing, both in the classroom and beyond.

School of Media and Strategic Communications alumnus commits largest gift in program history

To give back to the university he loves deeply, Keith Garton and his partner, David Sheehan, have committed the largest single gift ever directed to the OSU School of Media and Strategic Communications. The gift will establish the Garton Family Endowed Chair for Media and Strategic Communications, as well as endowed funds for rural journalism and student organizations.

When sports media major Steve Spears came to OSU as a sophomore, it was only three weeks before he was on camera. “It didn’t go great,” Spears said with a laugh. Luckily he’s had many more opportunities to not only hone his craft, but also help future and incoming journalists along the way: for two years, Spears has been president of OSU’s National Association of Black Journalists, building a community and creating opportunities for his fellow media majors.
