Six College of Arts and Sciences seniors receive top honors from the Alumni Association

Six seniors from the College of Arts and Sciences have been named 2020-2021 Outstanding Seniors by the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association. The Outstanding Seniors award recognizes seniors who show excellence through academic achievement; campus and community involvement; academic, athletic or extracurricular honors or awards; scholarships; and work ethic during their time at OSU.

NIH awards $1.7M to microbiology research team headed by Dr. Matthew Cabeen

The start of Fall semester brought some unexpected happy news for Dr. Matthew Cabeen of OSU’s Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics: the National Institutes of Health accepted his grant proposal and awarded his research team $1.7 million over five years to study how a bacterium senses and responds to stress.

An article co-authored by Dr. Wouter Hoff of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics was recently published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, a prestigious journal that focuses on advancements in the natural and clinical sciences. Hoff’s research on extreme halophiles—bacteria that thrive in high-salt environments—led to the discovery that certain bacteria are able to switch osmoprotectant strategies.

Combining dance and science

Students win awards at CAS Three Minute Thesis Finals

After 32 College of Arts and Sciences graduate students competed in the preliminary rounds and 13 advanced to the championship round, four impressed the judges enough to win awards during the college’s Three Minute Thesis Finals on Oct. 30. Ph.D. students Benjamin Nelson (Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) and Erin Wood (Department of Psychology) tied for the win, with each receiving a $300 prize. Wood also earned an additional $300 as the People’s Choice Award winner. Sarah Elzay, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Integrative Biology, placed second and received $200. Meagan Bourne, a master’s student in the Department of Political Science, placed third to earn $100.

College of Arts and Sciences honors 25 alumni at Hall of Fame Ceremony

Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences honored 25 of its most successful alumni Sept. 27 during the 2019 CAS Distinguished Alumni & Hall of Fame Ceremony at the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade & Development. Ardoth Hassler and Dr. George Thompson were both inducted into the Hall of Fame, while Brent Butcher and Maddy Cunningham were named Rising Stars. There were also 21 Distinguished Alumni recipients.

Graham sees science and art in dentistry

Caroline Graham decided she wanted to be a researcher as a young girl. She was inspired by a National Geographic article about the study of microbes in the ice of Antarctica. The recent Oklahoma State University graduate is headed to the University of Oklahoma’s College of Dentistry. She completed an Honors College degree in May with a double major in microbiology/cell and molecular biology, and biochemistry, along with minors in chemistry and accounting. Among the many awards she earned were College of Arts and Sciences Top 10 Seniors and recognition among the OSU Alumni Association’s 15 Outstanding Seniors.

Fry worked hard to enjoy all of the OSU experience

It was natural for Emily Fry to become a scholar at Oklahoma State University, where her parents are both leaders. Her mother, Pamela, is OSU-Tulsa's president. Her father, Don, is director of technology for the College of Education, Health and Aviation. Fry recently completed her biological science/pre-health degree, earning significant honors for her accomplishments, including recognition as one of the OSU Alumni Association’s 15 Outstanding Seniors and as a College of Arts and Sciences Top 10 Senior.
