Engineering a better lift: Multidisciplinary OSU team crafts new model for strength training

REARGEAR 2.0 is a collaboration between multiple disciplines within OSU.  Dr. Jason Daniel Miller of the School of Kinesiology, Applied Health and Recreation, Dr. Jerome Hausselle of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Dr. Harshvardhan Singh of the Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institute, oversaw the efforts of this project, which was showcased at the fall 2025 College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology  Senior Design Expo, where it earned first place.

As people age, they face natural declines in muscle strength and bone density, increasing the risk of falls, loss of independence and reduced quality of life. But research shows that just eight weeks of resistance training can reverse these effects, empowering older adults to gain strength, build self-confidence and enjoy a better quality of life.

OSU’s Tactical Fitness and Nutrition Lab provides vital wellness resources for nation’s first responders

In 2019, Drs. Jay Dawes and Jill Joyce took a step to optimize health, fitness and performance for these populations by establishing the Tactical Fitness and Nutrition Lab. Now, they are exploring opportunities to work with OSU’s Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institution to accelerate the land-grant mission and fuel the work they are already doing.
