Partnering with two researchers from Colorado State University, McCullagh has earned a $2.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study a protein in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.

Sergio Mares — who moved to Stillwater from Mexico at age 16 — will graduate with dual degrees in Biochemistry and Microbiology/Cell and Molecular Biology, along with minors in Spanish, Chemistry and Plant Biology. As if earning multiple degrees wasn’t hard enough, he also worked full time doing construction, painting and home remodeling during what proved to be a “financially stressful” 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six seniors from the College of Arts and Sciences have been named 2020-2021 Outstanding Seniors by the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association. The Outstanding Seniors award recognizes seniors who show excellence through academic achievement; campus and community involvement; academic, athletic or extracurricular honors or awards; scholarships; and work ethic during their time at OSU.
